Professional biography
Dr Christiaan Rudolf Oosthuizen is an Orthopaedic Surgeon with more than 35 years of experience in private practice. His practice has a particular focus on contemporary partial knee replacement, hip replacement surgery and the management of degenerative spinal conditions.
Since establishing his practice in 1990, Dr Oosthuizen has remained committed to delivering evidence-based orthopaedic care tailored to each patient's individual needs. He believes that successful treatment begins with an accurate diagnosis and careful assessment, allowing the most appropriate treatment plan to be developed for each patient.
Alongside his clinical practice, Dr Oosthuizen has maintained a longstanding commitment to education, research and the advancement of orthopaedic surgery. He currently serves as an Honorary Lecturer in the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of the Witwatersrand, where he continues to contribute to postgraduate teaching and clinical research.
Training & qualifications
Dr Oosthuizen matriculated in 1973 before graduating with an MBChB from the University of Stellenbosch in 1979. He completed his MMed (Orthopaedics) at the University of Pretoria in 1989 before entering private practice in 1990.
In 2022, he was awarded a PhD by the University of the Witwatersrand for his research into knee osteoarthritis grading and arthroplasty. His academic work continues to focus on improving patient selection, surgical outcomes and the advancement of contemporary knee arthroplasty.

Practice history
Dr Oosthuizen established his private practice in 1990, consulting at Garden City Clinic and Life Flora Hospital. In 1996, he relocated his practice to Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital, where he continues to practise.
Since 2023, he has also consulted at Johannesburg Surgical Hospital in Northcliff, where he continues to provide orthopaedic care alongside his practice at Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital.

Orthopaedic emergencies outside consulting hours
If you experience an orthopaedic emergency outside of consulting hours, please report immediately to the Casualty Department at either Johannesburg Surgical Hospital (JSH) or Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital for assessment and treatment. The casualty doctors will provide the necessary emergency care and arrange specialist orthopaedic referral if required.
