Best Exercises After Partial Knee Replacement

Dr CR Oosthuizen 3 min read

Quad sets, heel slides, stationary bike, sit-to-stand and gentle walking.

First 2 weeks: quadriceps sets, straight leg raises, ankle pumps, heel slides for flexion, gentle knee extension over a rolled towel. Short walks several times a day rather than one long walk.

Weeks 2–6: stationary bike (no resistance initially), sit-to-stand from a chair, mini-squats holding a counter, calf raises, side-lying hip abduction. Range of motion work to reach 120°+.

Weeks 6–12: full bike with light resistance, step-ups, light leg press at the gym, balance work on a single leg, swimming. Build gradually — soreness the next day is the signal to ease back. Your physiotherapist will tailor this for your specific knee.
