Is Partial Knee Replacement Painful During Recovery?
Less painful than a total knee replacement, but expect real discomfort for 2–3 weeks.
Honest answer: there is real pain, particularly in the first 7–10 days, but it is consistently rated lower than after total knee replacement. Most patients describe it as manageable with the tablets prescribed and far better than they had feared.
Pain control is multi-layered: long-acting local anaesthetic in the joint, regular paracetamol, an anti-inflammatory and short-term opioid tablets for the first 5–10 days. Ice, elevation and early movement do as much for pain as any medication.
By 3 weeks most patients are off opioid pain medication. By 6 weeks the knee is sore only after activity. Pain that worsens rather than steadily improves is not normal — contact the rooms.
