Do You Need Physical Therapy After Partial Knee Replacement?

Dr CR Oosthuizen 3 min read

Yes. Structured physiotherapy is the single biggest determinant of how well your knee functions long-term.

Physiotherapy is not optional — it is the most important part of recovery. The surgery removes the painful arthritis; physiotherapy restores the strength, range and balance that the knee needs to work normally.

Most patients do 2–3 sessions a week for the first 6 weeks, then weekly for another 4–6 weeks. A good home exercise programme runs alongside, and is what produces the result. Patients who skip rehabilitation often have a knee that feels stiff and weak even though the implant is perfectly placed.

We work with a panel of trusted physiotherapists near our rooms and the hospital, and arrange your first session before you leave hospital.
