Sleep Positions During Recovery

Dr CR Oosthuizen 3 min read

On your back with a pillow under the calf, or on your side with a pillow between your knees.

On your back is the easiest position in the first 2 weeks. Place a pillow lengthwise under the calf (not directly under the knee, which encourages stiffness) to keep the leg slightly elevated and reduce swelling.

On your side is fine once comfortable, with a firm pillow between the knees to stop the operated leg rolling and twisting. Most patients prefer to lie on the non-operated side initially.

Sleeping on your stomach is uncomfortable for most patients in the first 4–6 weeks. It is not harmful — you just will not enjoy it. Sleep tends to be broken for the first 1–2 weeks; that improves as pain settles.
