Can You Drive After Partial Knee Replacement?
Left knee: usually 1–2 weeks (automatic). Right knee: 3–4 weeks once reaction time normalises.
Driving safely requires the leg to be off all opioid pain medication, to bend enough to operate the pedals comfortably and to react quickly enough for an emergency stop.
For left-knee surgery with an automatic vehicle, most patients are safe to drive at 1–2 weeks. For right-knee surgery, plan 3–4 weeks — reaction times measurably worsen in the first 3 weeks regardless of how the knee feels.
Before driving for the first time, test the leg in a stationary car: can you slam the brake hard without hesitation? If not, give it another week. Check that your motor insurance does not require formal medical clearance after surgery.
