International Travel After Knee Surgery

Dr CR Oosthuizen 3 min read

Short-haul: 2–3 weeks. Long-haul: 4–6 weeks with compression stockings and movement.

Short-haul flights (under 4 hours) are usually safe from 2–3 weeks post-op with compression stockings and an aisle seat to stretch the leg. Domestic travel for follow-up is fine from week 2.

Long-haul flights are generally avoided in the first 4 weeks because of the higher blood clot risk. From 4–6 weeks onwards, long-haul is safe with compression stockings, hourly walking in the aisle, good hydration and continued blood-thinning prophylaxis if still prescribed.

International patients flying home: we plan the flight date around your follow-up visit, provide a written medical report and supply a fit-to-fly letter on request.
