How Do You Prepare Mentally for Knee Replacement?
Information, realistic expectations, support, and a clear week-one plan.
Mental preparation is as important as physical preparation, and largely consists of removing unknowns. Read the practice's preparation booklet, attend the pre-operative consultation with a partner, and write down every question.
Set realistic expectations: weeks 1–2 are the hardest, week 3 turns a corner, by week 6 you are back into daily life, by 3 months the knee is comfortable, by 6–12 months it feels close to normal. Avoid scrolling worst-case stories online — survivorship bias works in reverse there.
Arrange practical support for week one before surgery: meals, transport, somebody to help in and out of the shower. Knowing the plan is set removes a huge amount of pre-op anxiety.
