What Questions Should You Ask Your Surgeon?

Dr CR Oosthuizen 4 min read

Volume, suitability evidence, implant choice, complication rate and what to expect long-term.

Useful questions to bring to your consultation: How many partial knee replacements do you do a year? What proportion of your knee replacements are partial rather than total? Why am I a candidate for partial — or why am I not? Which implant do you use and why?

Also ask: What is your complication rate, and how do you manage complications when they occur? What does my recovery realistically look like? When can I return to my specific job and sport? What happens if the implant fails — what would the next operation involve?

A surgeon who welcomes these questions and answers them with specific numbers rather than reassurance is one to trust. Bring a partner or friend to take notes — it is hard to absorb everything in one consultation.
