What's the Success Rate for Partial Knee Replacement in Active People?

Dr CR Oosthuizen 3 min read

Active patients consistently report the highest satisfaction scores after UKA.

Active patients — people who hike, cycle, ski, play golf or tennis, lift weights or do regular yoga — are exactly the group UKA was designed for. The preserved ligaments and natural knee mechanics translate to a knee that performs well under load.

Published outcomes show that 85–90% of active patients return to their pre-arthritis sport, with implant survival comparable to less active groups. Patient-reported outcome scores are often higher in active patients than in sedentary ones.

The trade is straightforward: high-impact running and contact sport accelerate wear and are best moderated. Everything else — including most of what active patients value — is encouraged.
