What Should You Avoid After Partial Knee Replacement?
Avoid impact loading for 6 weeks, contact sport long-term, and ignore any infection warning signs.
In the first 6 weeks: avoid impact loading (running, jumping), heavy lifting (>10 kg), prolonged kneeling on the operated knee, and crossing your legs in a way that twists the knee. Climb stairs one at a time and use a handrail.
Long-term: avoid contact sports (rugby, soccer, martial arts) and repetitive high-impact running. These do not destroy a UKA overnight but they shorten implant life. Tennis, golf, cycling, hiking, skiing, doubles tennis and swimming are all encouraged.
At any time: do not ignore a knee that becomes hot, much more swollen, increasingly painful or starts draining fluid. Dental and other surgical procedures should be discussed with the rooms — antibiotic cover is sometimes recommended for the first 2 years.
