Comparing Surgeons' Experience

Ask about annual UKA volume, complication rate, published outcomes and revision rate.
Four specific numbers to ask each surgeon: How many partial knee replacements do you do per year? What is your infection rate? What is your revision rate at 10 years? Do you publish outcomes on your own series?
Surgeons doing fewer than 12 UKAs a year consistently report higher revision rates in registry data. Surgeons doing 30+ a year, and surgeons who publish their own outcomes, tend to be in a different performance bracket.
It is reasonable and welcome to ask for a second opinion. A confident surgeon supports it; a defensive one is a warning sign.
