Home Setup Before Knee Surgery

Dr CR Oosthuizen 3 min read

Clear paths, raised toilet, things at hip height, ice ready and meals in the freezer.

Clear walkways: remove loose rugs, trailing cables and clutter from the routes between bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room. Crutches are unforgiving.

Bathroom: a raised toilet seat or commode for the first 2 weeks, a non-slip mat in the shower, a shower chair if you have one, and easy-to-reach toiletries.

Kitchen and bedroom: move daily-use items to hip height so you do not need to bend or reach. Cook and freeze a week of meals. Have ice packs in the freezer, a recliner or chair with arms ready, and a comfortable spot to elevate the leg above heart level.
